Talk of a a shared movie universe based on Hasbro's toy properties has been ongoing for years, but the conversation hasn't obviously been accompanied by much action. The Transformers franchise has battled on, obviously, but the G.I. Joe films never reached anything like those heights at the box office. Nevertheless, Paramount has finally just announced a release date for G.I. Joe 3, along with the inevitable Dungeons & Dragons reboot, a Micronauts movie, and something mysterious...
G.I. Joe will be with us on March 27, 2020, with Micronauts following on October 16 the same year. Dungeons & Dragons hits on July 23, 2021. And Untitled Hasbro Film arrives just over two months later on October 1, 2021.
Three years ago there was talk of the next G.I. Joe being directed by D.J. Caruso, with a writers room being led by Akiva Goldsman. Whether any of that's still in place is unclear. It seems unlikely that Channing Tatum or Dwayne Johnson will be involved.
Dungeons & Dragons, meanwhile, was developing last year at Warner Bros, with Rob Letterman directing and Ansel Elgort ready to star. That project was derailed, however, over rights issues, and Warners are no longer involved in the film's development. Whether there's any holdover from that project, or the D&D Paramount have just announced is something entirely else, again has yet to be revealed.
And that fourth, untitled film? Could be M.A.S.K.; could be Rom: Spaceknight; could be Visionaries; or it could be a crossover with all or some of the above, in which G.I. Joe teams up with Optimus Prime to defeat Miles Mayhem and Venger. All will become clear over the next couple of years...
