BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

Movie Review: 47 Meters Down Scary. Thrilling. Pulse-pounding

Scary. Thrilling. Pulse-pounding

RAMA is back.

47 Meters Down is scary, it’s thrilling and pulse-pounding and it’s sexy. One of the craziest shark films I’ve ever seen and one of the most fun times I’ve had in theaters this year. I understand that this particular genre has been somewhat belittled because of that outrageous cheesy “Sharknado” franchise, but I guarantee you that more than anything, “47 Meters Down” is an enjoyable survival film.

Mandy Moore and Claire Holt play two sisters, one is trying to rebound after a devastating break-up, she often plays it safe, while the other is more daring, a risk-taker. Some of the locals persuade them to go shark diving where they’re supposed to be in a protective cage deep in the open sea surrounded by the majestic Great Whites, but when their cage suddenly breaks away from their boat, they find themselves at the bottom of the seabed and the race against time begins. Not only will they have to evade the savage sharks, their oxygen supplies are also rapidly running out.

I think one of the things I appreciate the most about “47 Meters Down” is that the film has no intention of making the sharks be the villain. They’re not good sharks, they’re not bad sharks, they’re just sharks, they’re animals, they don’t have any personal agenda or vendetta, it’s the human characters’ fault for messing with the sharks’ territory. So that alone separates “47 Meters Down” from “Jaws," "The Shallows," and “Deep Blue Sea.”

Much credit to Mandy Moore and Claire Holt, not just for their impressive stamina in those underwater sequences since these are obviously physically challenging roles, but also the sisterly dynamic between them as they’re frustrated and terrified, so convincing that we the audiences become frustrated and terrified for them.

With any survival film, in “47 Meters Down” you’ll also get to see the determination of the human spirit, so despite their lack of knowledge of the ocean, Mandy Moore’s and Claire Holt’s characters keep racking their brains trying to find a way out. There are unpredictable consequences for their every attempt, between running out of air or drowning and getting eaten by sharks, the danger is ever present, so this is an anything-goes kind of movie.
