BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

Movie Review: #PiratesOfTheCaribbean #DeadMenTellNoTales

Fun, like the first film

Rama is back

Well, at least you can follow what’s going on in #PiratesOfTheCaribbean #DeadMenTellNoTales as opposed to that sleep-inducing incoherent babble that was “On Stranger Tides.” It seems that with this latest installment they’ve re-used the formula from the first movie “Curse of the Black Pearl” which I think is an effective strategy because Johnny Depp’s iconic character, Jack Sparrow, only works best when he’s not the lead but rather supports Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann, or in this latest case, Brenton Thwaites’ Henry Turner and Kaya Scodelario’s Carina Smyth

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS: Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea—notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.
I don’t know about you but after five times now, I think I can use a break from Jack Sparrow, he finally gets to me, the man exhausts me. He’s like one of those annoying people who deep down actually secretly cares, …but still extremely annoying. But hey, if that’s what Johnny Depp was going for, then kudos to him, mission accomplished.

As I said earlier, I think it’s a smart move on the writers and filmmakers part to recapture what worked from the first film and apply it to this installment, although this also does give sure signs that perhaps they’ve run out of ideas.

Javier Bardem is fantastic as the villain Captain Salazar, just as he was also fantastic as Bond villain in “Skyfall,” I think the Oscar-winning actor is just enjoying himself playing all these characters that freely allow him to put the fear of God into people.

The action sequences in this one are more well thought-out, which is a good thing, but a devil’s advocate might also argue that the entire movie is nothing but a VFX digital wizards’ showboating fiesta because though it can be stunning at times, the spectacle can also get overwhelming.

Overall, it is every bit a swashbuckling summer blockbuster adventure as you’d expect it to be. Fans won’t get disappointed and skeptics will be entertained. I wouldn’t say that it ends on a high note but the franchise does come full circle with “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.”
