Because two versions of a movie is never quite enough, 20th Century Fox has decided to snatch an idea that has been floating around for a while and make a new film based on The Fly.
And director J.D. Dillard, who saw success with his street magician action drama Sleight at last year's Sundance Film Festival, is in talks to co-write and direct the latest take on the idea, which was birthed in George Langelaan's short story. It was first adapted in 1958 by Kurt Neumann into a film starring David Hedison and Vincent Price, and followed a scientist looking to perfect instant teleportation who became fused with a fly after the insect enters the machine.
David Cronenberg upped the body horror content for the 1986 remake, featuring Jeff Goldblum slowly and messily transforming into the hybrid creature following a similar accident.
If he does lock down a deal, Dillard will co-write the latest script with Sleight's Alex Theurer, after the pair has finished working on their next film, horror pic Sweetheart, which is about to start shooting.
