Deepwater Horizon is competent, straight-forward, and absolutely mesmerizing. Review by Matt Cummings If Director Peter Berg's survival flick Deepwater Horizon proves anything, it's that good and decent people are usually made to suffer the will of more powerful ones, irregardless of the dangers or the facts. That's at least what Berg wants you to think, and he makes a convincing case between the concerned workers (including Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell) and those at BP (John Malkovich) who are determined to pump at this submersible offshore drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico. That decision and resulting explosion in 2010 which killed 11 and became the worst oil spill in US history certainly pulls on one's heartstrings as Mike Williams (Wahlberg) desperately tries to escape the burning rig while helping his boss (Russell) and other workers. According to THR Justin Lin is revving up Hot Wheels . The Star Trek Beyond filmmaker has closed a deal to develop, direct and produce, via his Perfect Storm Entertainment, a feature based on popular car toyline from Mattel. Lin and Perfect Storm will also have an option to co-finance the project. A Hot Wheels movie has been made, despite iterations being in development since 2003. McG was at one point attached to direct and produce for Columbia before it landed in the garage of Joel Silver and Warners. Legendary picked up the rights in earlier this decade. Simon Crane came on board to direct it in 2013 but the project has been sitting idle since 2014. Lin’s boarding injects some nitrous oxide into the project; Lin, his partner Troy Craig Poon, and Legendary will begin a search for a writer to take Hot Wheels back to the starting line. We brought word last month that James Corden and Rose Byrne had landed two of the lead roles in a planned live-action/CG blend version of Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit for Sony. They have some company now in the shape of Daisy Ridley and Elizabeth Debicki . Annie's Will Gluck is directing the film, which will see its animated creatures handled by Animal Logic, the company that provided Emmet and co. for The Lego Movie. The director also did a pass on the script, which has previously been written by Rob Lieber. Corden is set as the voice of Peter, with Byrne playing a live-action character named Bea. Ridley and Debicki's characters have not been announced, but they're listed as voice roles, so perhaps they're playing part of Peter's family. It's been a while since we've heard much of anything about a potential sequel to spoof action movie MacGruber . Still, director/co-writer Jorma Taccone and star/co-writer Will Forte keep insisting they're working on it. Taccone has just posted to Twitter that fresh work on the script is underway. MacGruber , which was spawned from the pair's Saturday Night Live parody of TV series MacGyver was a flop back in 2010, earning some terrible reviews. But it has, like movies such as Anchorman , gone on to cult status on home entertainment formats. Hence the renewed attempt to get a sequel into the world. While there is seemingly no company on board to make the thing yet (at least the options have expanded thanks to streaming companies since the movie opened), the pair – plus presumably co-writer John Solomon – is pressing ahead.
