F**king hilarious!
Rama is back.
Pardon my French but BAD SANTA 2 is f**king hilarious! As a fan of the first film who had been waiting for more than a decade, this sequel is every bit as funny as I expected it to be. Billy Bob Thornton is back in his not-giving-a-sh*t attitude, Tony Cox cusses up a storm like a maestro, and Kathy Bates is downright irreverent. There’s a certain irresistible appeal that comes with being unapologetic and that’s what BAD SANTA 2 gives ya!
Billy Bob Thornton returns as the nasty drunken loser Willie Soke who once again teams up with his angry little sidekick Marcus, played by Tony Cox. This time, their heist target is a charity organization in Chicago, run by the curvaceous Diane (Christina Hendricks) who seems decent from the outside but can actually be horny at times. That place is also where Willie discovers that his mom, Sunny Soke, (Kathy Bates) is actually the brain behind this little criminal operation of theirs. Let’s just say that those two don't share a happy history. Meanwhile, the only person that brings out Willie’s sliver of humanity, Thurman Merman (Brett Kelly) goes all the way to Chicago to rejoin Willie so they can spend Christmas together.
The first film was directed by Terry Zwigoff who I believe has been out of the industry for quite some time now, but director Mark Waters, thankfully retains much of what made the first film so beloved by many of us who were looking for a different kind of holiday film. Scripted by Johnny Rosenthal and Shauna Cross, based on the characters created by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, BAD SANTA 2 adds the mother element and Kathy Bates delivers, as she always does. Willie and his mom Sunny are what you’d consider white trash, Billy Bob Thornton and Kathy Bates understand that and so they go to town with it, no holds barred, they way they talk, their appearances. Because these characters have seen rock bottom, they don’t find it hard anymore to pretend like everything’s puppies and rainbows.
The essence of the first film lies in isolation and anti-heroes which is what Willie Soke is, the sequel tackles the same dilemma but it makes us wonder is Willie not able to escape the residue of his upbringing or can he choose a different path and still be Willie? There are three people this time that can significantly affect him, they are Marcus, Sunny and Thurman. That choice will determine the kind of person Willie wants to be.
The comedy in this film is obviously NSFW but I wouldn’t want it any other way. It cracks me up that women are so attracted to Willie when others probably see him as revolting or repulsive. One of the world’s most beautiful women, Christina Hendricks does a fantastic job playing a nympho. Acting legend, Kathy Bates, is basically Billy Bob Thornton’s equal, they’re like two heavyweight boxers in the ring, such a privilege just to watch them banter. Just like Willie Soke, BAD SANTA 2 doesn’t give a sh*t whether or not its brand of humor fits your ideals.
