Loot Crate moves its subscription box to new heights June 2015's Cyber-themed box.
Review by Matt Cummings
With strong appearances by the subscription box Loot Crate in March and April and May, things were sure to take a backseat at least once after February's disaster, right? I mean, we couldn't be THAT lucky to get impressively better and better boxes from the service that promises a nice return on your $20 monthly subscription. Luckily, I can report that May's theme of CYBER is not only excellent, but moves the service to a new level with improving quality and a clear desire to be #1 in the industry.
Neighbors are now used to seeing Loot's nondescript sex toy packaging appearing at my door. Let's just hope they're comfortable with the whipping sounds as well.
A quick scissoring of the tape underneath and goodness abounds. I think I see a little Transformer/Tron action here!
Upon cracking the case, we find another terrific t-shirt, this time Optimus Prime in a Tron-themed shirt. This is consistently the best part of Loot Crate, with not one of them disappointing since I began in February. Once again, this one alone was probably worth the value of the entire box, considering if Hot Topic sold it.
A very nice patch of The Replicants Corp Logo from 1982's Blade Runner. Although it's a little small as measured, it's still a high-quality treat and reminds us of the great Ridley Scott film. This one is definitely staying with me, although it has appeared on several eBay posts.
This Terminator Half Scale Endo Skull is quite impressive - out of the highly-decorated outer box, it feels very substantial and frankly more terrifying in my hand. Another very solid addition to the Crate.
There's an interesting set of directions here, as if the box is meant to be re-assembled using pieces from the Crate. Visiting the site proved this true.
This is the first time I've gotten a Crate in which the mailing box itself - always internally decorative but sadly disposable - will be used to highlight the skull and keychain. It's a genius move!
My friends love playing Borderlands, so this 9" mouse pad is perfect. It's so large that it had to be folded in half on shipping, but still dominated the bottom of the box.
With the impending release of Terminator Genisys, this Brain Chip Keychain from the movie is actually quite heavy. This could easily be added to the display, provided you wish to set it up. These will look great with my T2 steelbook!
An interesting submission here is a packet of 2 Battlestar Galactica Target Posters, featuring the Type 2 Cylons from the SyFy series. I suppose you could hang these, but the pouch it came in is worth keeping, so I'll be figuring out another way to display them. It's hard to judge the value of these, as the set is obviously high quality, but it's apparently another exclusive, so I'll limit my disappointment until I find out otherwise.
Always adding a fun little element to their boxes, Loot has included a set of Nerd HQ Stickers. These will look on your laptop, or perhaps on your forehead.
One of the things I love about Loot Crate is presented here: a Glow in the Dark Circuit Board Blue Pouch. It's around the same size an Ipsy pouch, and has a hook on it for hanging. This is the sort of thing Loot has been known for: find cool nerdy things that we can use everyday. It's meant to be used as a pencil pouch, but its size suggests a wide variety of uses.
As you can see, I've already found an awesome alternative!
Rounding out this month's box are the usual: a Cyber Themed Button and this month's edition of Loot Crate Magazine #23. And as always, we get to see what's in the Mega Crate - which goes to one lucky subscriber - and the Mini Mega. Some lucky subscriber is taking home an amazing box, which includes a tablet, a hand-decorated PC case with high-end graphics card, and a ton of Borderlands swag. Hey guys, where's my prize?
In the end, June 2015's Loot Crate dives deep into cyber madness, once again delivering an exceptional set of items that's sure to make everyone happy. This month's gear screams high quality and exclusive, two things Loot has promised to give their subscribers as the sub box genre explodes. At the end of the day, Loot stands atop all others, adding an optional display into its shipping container. That and the shirt alone are worth giving June high praise. Add the pouch, skull, and patch for even more value. If you missed out on Cyber, get onboard with July. You probably won't be disappointed.
