BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

Interview With Director & Writer Elliot Diviney For @ARS_Film

We had a chance to talk to Elliot Diviney the writer and director of American Rescue Squad

A group of mysterious villains known as 'The Alliance' sets a trap for the Taxpayer. They imprison him, torture him, and make plans to publicly crucify him. Local janitor Richard Randolph rounds up retired Superheroes, and hatches a plan to rescue the Taxpayer. The villains stage a public rally, where many citizens come to watch the Taxpayer's crucifixion. The heroes invade the bad guy lair, and a large battle ensues. Various comedic and action-packed musical numbers are intertwined throughout the madness. In the midst of the big political debate and battle for mankind will the heroes save the day?

Is an American Rescue Squad any match for an Avengers?

The members of the American Rescue Squad don't actually have any superpowers. Their advantages are in logic and deductive reasoning, so to be honest, the avengers would probably win in a fight. Although as fast and strong as the avengers are, they still answer to authority and some higher form of government. The American Rescue Squad isn't afraid to stand their ground against politicians. In fact, they like to knock them out.

For those that haven’t seen it, what are you spoofing here?

It's a parody of all sorts of things – musicals, kung fu movies, cartoons, elections, comic books, and yes, superheroes. It’s a spoof on modern day beauracracy and political correctness. We were once described as a mix between Trey and Matt, Mike Judge, and the Zucker brothers. I think it's a fair assessment. We wanted to see how many different genres we could squeeze into one independent film, and American Rescue Squad is the result.

Was it your idea?

Yes, this was an original idea between my brother Adam Diviney and me. We were both so fed up with all of the reboots, sequels, spin-offs, prequels, and crossovers flooding the cinemas. It was important to us that we have our own characters and storylines so that the audience wouldn't be able to predict our next move. We like catching people off guard. We wrote the script over a weekend. It was our intention to do a live-action version of “Team America: World Police”

Did you hold open auditions?

Yes, we had a few different roles that actors could audition for, and then we cast the entire movie off of that. The city where we did all the filming has a very small community of actors and actresses, so we kind of already knew who everybody was. But there were a few surprises in the auditions.

Where was the movie shot?

Funny you should ask! We filmed all around Minneapolis and St. Paul in Minnesota. Our locations included various parks, offices, hotels, people's houses and apartments, and my parents' basement...
It’d be remiss not to ask you what your favorite costume in the movie is…Baby birth control. It was amazing when we tasked costume designer Hannah Eustis with exactly matching the full-sized birth control costume but on a smaller scale. She delivered. The costume included little sunglasses, and a pair of tiny green boots.

Do you think there’s any shot of a sequel? Maybe a bigger-budget one with a name star?

I imagine that we'll be seeing some of these characters again, but probably in a different context. I've already written several scripts that exist in this same world, but they include a variety of genres and inspirations. All i can tell you at this point.

American Rescue Squad is on DVD May 19 http://www.amazon.com/American-Rescue-Squad-Tony-Czech/dp/B00U2YNMMW

Naked Gun Reboot On It's Way

If you've seen Naked Gun - or The Naked Gun: From The Files Of Police Squad ! to give its full title - you'll know that it's a comedic masterpiece that springboards off astonishing levels of silliness and random spoofery. Leslie Nielsen's Frank Drebin is a loveable buffoon for the ages, even when he's discussing his dicky prostrate. Do not, however, expect the Ed Helms -starring reboot to adopt exactly the same tack. According to Naked Gun director/co-writer David Zucker, talking up Airplane!'s screening at Nashville's Wild West Comedy Festival, the new version will not attempt to hit the same spoofy sweet spot as the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams' 1988 comedy. "It won’t be like the Naked Gun that I did," Zucker revealed. "It may be good, but it won’t be that kind of movie. They’re going to use the title. They asked me if I wanted to produce. They’re nice people, but they don’t want to do that style of spoof that I do." One departure
