Retelling of the Peter Pan tale gets the Hook.
By Brandon Wolfe
Warner Bros’ Pan, the live-action retelling of the oft-retold Peter Pan saga, has been pulled from its set release date of July 24 and will now open on October 9, the same day recently vacated by Vacation, which WB gave the exact opposite treatment to, moving it up to July. The studio perhaps felt that they would have a better shot at success opening outside of an unusually crowded July, or simply sensed that there was little awareness of or excitement about Pan brewing out there. In its official announcement, however, the studio cited the reason as “giving both the film and the filmmakers some extra breathing room.”
Director Joe Wright said in a statement that he applauded the decision. “As you might expect, the fantastical story of Peter Pan involves very complex effects, and I did not want to compromise on quality in finishing the film. This allows me and my team the time to complete the movie and tell the story the way it should be told.”
Pan, which follows the early days of the Neverland gang, stars Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily and Levi Miller as Peter Pan.
