What did we think of April 2015's Fantasy-themed box? Click below to find out!
Review by Matt Cummings
After a good March 2015 box that saw Spies as its theme, April arrives with a box chock full of memorable Fantasy goodness. The monthly geek subscription box service is among dozens of entries vying for your hard-earned dollars, with Loot promising a nice return on your $20 monthly subscription. Its hand-picked, cool geeky collection wrapped around a theme faces a lot of competition, but let's see why April's unquestionably slayed its dragon.
I love this nondescript sex toy of the month packaging.
Upon cracking the case, we find a map and an awesome Dungeons and Dragons t-shirt. I loved this game as a kid, and seeing it return to a shirt near you was a great way to start off the experience. This one alone was probably "worth its value" but as you'll soon see, there's lots of interesting stuff in which to partake.
Another favorite film from my youth was The Princess Bride, and these themed playing cards look great! Inside you'll get painted images of each memorable character and a famous quote from the film. For Carey Elwes' Westley, it's the classic "As You Wish." Very, very cool.
Next up are a dragon-themed bow tie and an inflatable crown. Based on the image of the crown in the magazine more on that later), this would make an excellent party gift. The bow tie is small, so I'll probably be dumping that on eBay. I wish we would have had the choice of a bow- or traditional tie, but the thought to include one at all is great.
The HBO hit series Game of Thrones makes it appearance in two important ways: first up is a 4GB "Stark Sigil" themed drive in the shape of a wolf. Flash memory is so cheap these days that it's impossible not to find them at discount stores everywhere, but its shape makes it a keeper. Another impressive Thrones addition piece to the Crate is a set of magnets. According to the description, "Whichever house you favor, show off your pride with this set of four sigil magnets featuring the the feudal clans of mythical Westeros." Awesome.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of this month's Crate is The Harry Potter Luggage Tag. It's made of solid rubber, which means it will look great on your backpack or travel accessory. I would not, under any circumstances, put this on checked luggage: it's so nice that someone at the airport will seek to relieve you of it. Yes, it's that nice, and yet another solid addition to the Crate.
The final pieces - a button showing off this month's theme, and Loot Crate Magazine #21 - are standard additions to each Crate. The magazine features articles including the Mega Crate, which goes to one lucky subscriber. Some lucky subscriber is to take home a $2,500 prize, which includes 2 LED monitors and a gaming computer. Lucky!! Again, I didn't win this month, so Loot Crate you better get to it!
In the end, April 2015's Loot Crate is a solid and satisfying submission. It's probably the best of the three I have received, with everything screaming quality. The disappointing February box is out of mind now, and with Loot Crate asking for my opinions of April, I feel like the company is trying to make a better effort to give us quality gear. Done, done, and done. I could easily flip the contents on eBay, but I'll be keeping most if not all of it. I know, so greedy... Discuss this review with fellow SJF fans on Facebook.
