Fans who wanted Toy Story 4 to be a return trip with Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the gang was dealt a blow on Friday, as Pixar president Jim Morris told Disney Latino (via The Daily Telegraph) that the new film in the franchise will veer from the relationship between the now-college-aged Andy and his beloved toys that drove the first three movies.
“In temperament it is, but it will be a love story,” said Morris. “It will be a romantic comedy. It will not put much focus on the interaction between the characters and children.”
Morris also dispelled the idea the new film, coming after what with many thought was a logical, perfect end to the series, was a money grab: “That’s not what it’s about. It’s about an idea that is met with enthusiasm.”
On board for the new project is John Lasseter, director of Toy Story and Toy Story 2, along with Rashida Jones and Will McCormack to pen the script.
The movie is slated for a June 16, 2017 release in the U.S
