The Russo Brothers are set to direct the follow-ups to The Avengers.
Story by Matt Cummings
It's not easy these days to suddenly find yourself at the top of the world, especially if you're relatively new and your resume isn't filled with tons of experience. That's the situation which brothers Anthony and Joe Russo - creators of Captain America: The Winter Soldier - have found themselves, as the two took a niche career as veteran television guys and turned it in to box office gold. With Winter Soldier holding on to the top film spot until Guardians of the Galaxy ended that run in September, it was clear that Marvel president Kevin Feige had found his men.
Now, that success is being rewarded in two important ways. First, we've learned that after they finish directing Captain America: Civil War, they will begin developing the two sequels for Avengers: Age of Ultron (which premieres on May 1, 2015) titled Avengers: Infinity War. But that's not all: several outlets - including BadAssDigest and The Hollywood Reporter - are confirming that they will do it Back to Future style, shooting both films at one time.
News of the signing wasn't surprising, as Avengers director Joss Whedon had stated at multiple occasions that he would be stepping aside after Ultron to pursue other projects. Therefore, Marvel needed to lock someone into a long-term contract: why not the Russo Brothers? However, the second piece of news is great for fans who worried about the availability of some Marvel actors, since the films are spread out over two years (2018 and 2019). This reduces the overall cost to produce both films, thus fitting in with Marvel's rather frugal financial plans.
There is something of note here that fans might not realize: this signing and news of the double shoot fits perfectly into Marvel's plans to introduce Spider-man into their world. With Marvel and Sony recently agreeing to share the character in both team-ups and a solo venture (rumored for 2017), it's now almost assured that we'll see Peter Parker in the Russo films. How he will fit in is the subject of fierce rumor, with the best one pointing to Spidey being the face of The Avengers while the core team is either indisposed or on other missions.
