The Force Awakens director might strike back.
By Brandon Wolfe
While J.J. Abrams is kicking off the relaunch of the Star Wars franchise with December’s The Force Awakens, he has been conspicuously absent from the announcement for any of the subsequent films announced, be it the regular chapter entries or the spin-offs. Rian Johnson is taking the helm of Episode VIII and was widely speculated to be directing Episode IX as well given that he's also been announced as that film's writer.
However, according to Latino Review, the Disney higher-ups are so pleased with what they’ve seen of The Force Awakens that Abrams is now their first choice to direct the ninth episode of the saga. If true, this stands as a major boost of encouragement for what Abrams will deliver later this year.
Star Wars: Episode IX is set for release in 2019.
