BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

Fox Officially Reopens The X-Files

The truth is that six new episodes will soon be out there.

By Brandon Wolfe

Looks like those rumors have panned out: The X-Files is indeed returning to television. The iconic ‘90s sci-fi series will be returning to Fox as a six-episode event series a whopping 13 years after it bowed out. Stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their roles as FBI agents Mulder and Scully and series creator/executive producer Chris Carter will also be returning. Production on the event series will gear up this summer, but the air date and plot have yet to be revealed.

“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” said Carter. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

It’s actually been just seven years since Mulder and Scully last resurfaced, in 2008’s critical and commercial big-screen failure, The X-Files: I Want to Believe. That sequel seemed to be the death knell for the franchise as we knew it, but this event series now allows for at least the possibility of a better capper for the characters.

This revival can almost certainly thank last year’s similar Fox television resurrection 24: Live Another Day for its existence. The trend of bringing defunct series back from the dead has been on the rise of late, with Showtime’s recent announcement of a Twin Peaks continuation and NBC dusting off Heroes. Could Lost be next?
