What's in Thanos' wallet? The single most destructive thing in the universe.
Story by Matt Cummings
Although 2015 is filled with terrific upcoming films - like May's Avengers: Age of Ultron - we here at SJF are also into the forward-looking business. We're namely looking at 2018, to the end of Marvel's Phase 3 Infinity War. Central to that story will be Thanos the Mad Titan - featured in both The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy - who will eventually wish for the end of the entire universe to please the human form of Death. While a brilliant strategist and a tough cookie to crack, Thanos will need something more than his weirdly-chiseled chin to make that happen. Enter The Infinity Gauntlet, a glove which carries the six Infinity Stones.
According to Marvel Comics and the Cinematic Universe, before our universe came into being, there was another universe here, and in it were six singularities. These represented six different parts of the cosmos and were fused into ingots that survived the death of the old universe. Attempts were made to bring these Infinity Stones together, all with disastrous consequences for the owners. Thus, the Infinity Gauntlet was created to house them, allowing its owner to bend the universe to its owner's will. Fearing this power, The Elders of the Universe - the original owners - scattered them across the galaxy. This led to our friend Thanos to search for them, eventually reassembling the Gauntlet and wrecking havoc on the universe.
How this will play out in the MCU is already somewhat apparent: in it, Thor's world Asgard holds the Gauntlet but not the stones, while various planets and individuals keep the stones safe. It's assumed that somehow Thanos will secure the Gauntlet sometime during Thor Ragnarok and pursue the locations of the stones himself, with the final events playing out in the aforementioned Infinity War two-parter.
But what exactly are each of the stones? Thanks to our friends at NeoMam Studios, we've provided the following Infographic explaining their powers.
Phase 2 of Marvel's Cinematic Universe concludes this year with The Avengers: Age of Ultron, releasing on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on July 17, 2015. Phase 3 kicks off with Captain America: Civil War on May 6 2016, and ends with Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 on May 4 2018, and Infinity War – Part 2 on May 3 2019.
