Director says fans "are going to freak out" about the third Cap movie
The movie won’t be released for almost two years and isn’t even in production yet. That doesn't mean that the publicity machine for Marvel Studios' Captain America 3 isn't already working at full strength, with co-director Anthony Russo already hinting at what to expect in the Star-Spangled Avenger’s next solo outing.
“I can’t divulge who is going to be in the film, but I think fans are going to freak out when they hear about it,” Russo teased when talking to Movies.com. It’s possible he was referring to Hawkeye, who Jeremy Renner hinted would be making an appearance earlier this week, but Russo refused to name names. “We wanted to push the character forward into the modern age with The Winter Soldier, and we want to keep pushing the character forward. We always want to be true to who Captain America is, but we want to surprise people about where he can go and what he's capable of. That's about as specific as I can get about where we might take him,” he said.
Well, maybe he could get a little more specific. In a separate interview with MTV News, Russo was asked whether the third Captain America movie would follow the lead of Marvel’s third Iron Man and provide some sense of closure to the character. After saying that that was a “hard question to answer,” Russo added, “I will say this: yes, for satisfying storytelling, you want a beginning, middle and end. That’s the natural arc that we all thrive off of in narrative.”
So does this mean that Cap 3 could be the end of the road for Chris Evans’ hero? “The great thing about the Marvel universe, just like the publishing, it’s a very vast, inter-connected universe, where characters will have their rise and fall, so to speak, and hand off to other characters,” Russo said. “As the cinematic universe moves forward, you may start to see the cinematic universe adopt that same pattern.”
Cap handing off to another character…? Well, it’s happened multiple times in the comic books, with both the Falcon and Winter Soldier taking over the role of Captain America at times. With writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely both citing Ed Brubaker’s run on the comic series as inspiration, perhaps fans should prepare for the Winter Soldier to take over as Cap a couple years from now. After all, while Chris Evans will have two movies remaining on his Marvel contract after next year's Avengers: Age of Ultron, Winter Soldier Sebastian Stan will have seven movies left on his deal…
