The EW cover gives us tantalizing clues about the 2015 release.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD.
Ever since the Marvel Studios panel at Comic-Con 2013 released their now-famous teaser trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, fans have been clamoring for updates about the 2015 release. Through set visits and an ABC special, we've seen pictures of several of the team members, including new recruits Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. But, we've yet to hear specifics about plot. that changed today when Entertainment Weekly released their newest cover and interview with Robert Downey Jr and Director Joss Whedon. Take a look at the image below, and continue reading for more of the interview.
From the image, we can see just how much damage Stark's baby-gone-bad has gotten, with rubble and fires strewn behind them. But it's also the first time we've seen Ultron in all his bad-assery. From the looks of it, Director Joss Whedon has kept the best elements of The Avengers' greatest enemy while adding more detail to his previously smooth robotic body. But with every question answer, two more (literally) appear: first, did Stark really destroy all the Iron Man suits in Iron Man 3 or did he build a new one to face off against Ultron? Second, where did Cap get his suit? By all accounts, SHIELD is still being rebuilt by Phil Coulson, and the last we checked Cap had a huge bullet hole through his WWII suit.
But it's the interview with RDJ that gives us the clearest idea of the plot. According to EW, Ultorn will be created in an effort to give The Avengers some down time after saving the universe after the attack on New York and their takedown of various Hydra facilities. The idea of "Isn't it someone else's turn?" will send Stark to develop the A.I. Ultron, which will eventually determine that the best way to eliminate threats is to eliminate mankind. With no one ready to stand up for the world, The Avengers will have to take down Ultron on their own, while determining the intentions of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.
There were more quotes delivered in the the EW article, which we've added below.
RDJ on the state of The Avengers after New York and post-Hydra takedown:
"The downside of self-sacrifice is that if you make it back, you’ve been out there on the spit and you’ve been turned a couple times and you feel a little burned and traumatized.”
Whedon on Ultron:
“Ultron sees the big picture and he goes, ‘Okay, we need radical change, which will be violent and appalling, in order to make everything better’; he’s not just going ‘Muhaha, soon I’ll rule! “He’s on a mission. He wants to save us.”
In addition, the article runs through an early scene of the film, which apparently explains the rise of Ultron, and the new roles of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. From all indications, Marvel Studios is gearing up for a year-long campaign for Avengers: Age of Ultron, and we'll be here to break down every detail.
