New plot details emerge and EW's released a cover.
While many SJF writers tend to chide yours truly over the my use of the word 'dystopian' to describe the onslaught of post-apocalyptic films over the past year, one cannot argue that it works. Unfortunately, not all dystopian films have met with great success, including this year's bomb Transcendence. But luckily, the film that made 'post-apocalyptic' a household word is soon returning, and Entertainment Weekly has all the details.
Mad Max: Fury Road is a continuation of George Miller's classic series, which has become nothing short of a cult classsic. Starring Mel Gibson in the titular role, the series dealt with the former cop Max driving through the wilds of Australia, searching for fuel and attacking the various gangs which took over as the government collapsed. Mad Max has been on a long hiatus, but Fury Road looks to return the series back to where it's meant to be: on top.
Test screenings have apparently been favorable, which stars Tom Hardy replacing Mel Gibson and adding Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult to the mix. While the plot is unkown, Miller met with EW and said the following:
“I wanted to tell a linear story–a chase that starts as the movie begins and continues for 110 minutes,” says the Australian writer-director. Fury Road features few digital effects and even less dialogue, he explains. “In this crucible of very intense action, the characters are revealed.”
If the test version survives a similar crucible - that of the editing room - Fury Road sounds like a serious chase film with lots of tension, something which has been key to the series enduring throughout the decades. Along with the interview, EW has released a cover which tells us a lot about the feel of the film:
Looking at the image, we see Theron sporting what looks like a mechanized arm to replace hers which was lost. That and her shorn hair stand in comparison to Hardy's worn and frankenstein-ed look, a common theme in the Mad Max universe. Much of the series has seen our actors donning a hodge-podge of costumes, as if they picked much of it up along the way. The movie hasn't been without its share of costly delays. But with the film headlong into the editing process, it sounds like Miller's vision might actually come true. Add the heavyweights of Theron, Hardy, and Hoult, and you might have a well-deserved addition to a franchise that's frankly been out of the game for too long.
Mad Max: Fury Road opens on May 15, 2015.
