The announcement should wrap up JJ Abrams' casting of the Sci-Fi odyssey.
Production on Star Wars: Episode VII is apparently moving smoothly, and fans have gotten tantalizing pictures of the cast as they sat together to read the script. But ever since Director JJ Abrams announced his cast for Star Wars: Episode VII, we had heard rumors that the creator of Alias and the current reboot of the Star Trek movie franchise was looking to add more members to that galaxy far, far away. Well, today we learned about two more, and they're big.
First up is Oscar-winning Actress Lupita Nyong'o, who took home top honors in February for Best Supporting Actress in 12 Years a Slave.
The other announcement will bring a smile to Game of Thrones fans. Actress Gwendoline Christie has been pegged to play a currently unknown role. She's become a fan favorite for her portrayal of the stead-fast, sword-wielding Brienne of Tarth in the HBO hit.
Here's a portion of the press release that focuses on the hirings:
"Lupita Nyong’o joins the recently announced cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. This year, her breakthrough performance in 12 Years a Slave earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Gwendoline Christie, currently starring in the hit television series Game of Thrones as Brienne of Tarth, has also been cast in the production. She can next be seen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.
“I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.”
With shooting already commenced last month in Abu Dhabi, it's unclear how much screen time these two will enjoy. But it is a good sign that Abrams is filling his roster with top-name talent to match several up-and-coming stars. We'll keep you posted when their characters are finally announced.
