Billy Bob Thornton is heading to FX's Fargo. The Oscar winner has been tapped to play Lorne Malvo, the rootless, manipulative man who meets a small-town insurance salesman and sets him on a path of destruction, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Having already locked in its two heroes, Fox and director Matthew Vaughn look one step closer to gearing up production on “ The Secret Service ” with Samuel L. Jackson now set to play the villain. Pic already stars Colin Firth and Taron Egerton with Vaughn directing. Marv Films will finance and produce the film, based on the comic series by Mark Millar and David Gibbons. Production is expected to start this fall. Vaughn and Jane Goldman have written the adaptation of the Mark Millar and David Gibbons graphic novel. Story follows a veteran secret agent who takes a young upstart under his wing. Vaughn had always intended to have a big star as his main antagonist, having already pursued Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio. With Jackson now in place, Vaughn’s last job is to find the female lead. Yesterday’s news that James Cameron has hired Black Dahlia screenwriter Josh Friedman to work on Avatar 2 with him was apparently just the tip of the iceberg lurking in Pandora’s oceans (assuming Pandora’s oceans have cold enough zones for icebergs, which remains to be seen). Regardless, Cameron has now made good on his statement of May last year about being the Avatar business, confirming he’ll make Avatar 2, 3 and 4 ready for release in a year apart from 2016 onwards. Disney and Weinstein are developing an adaptation of Artemis Fowl for the big screen. The live-action feature will be based on the first and second installments in Disney Publishing Worldwide’s best-selling children’s series, written by Eoin Colfer. "If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy,” said Weinstein in a statement. “I feel as though everything is coming full circle considering Bob De Niro and Jane Rosenthal brought me this book while I was still at Miramax and within hours I told them I wanted the rights to the film." While the DC Universe is expanding in fits and starts on cinema screens with the recent announcement of the Batman/Superman film at Comic-Con, the other major superheroes from the canon are having a tougher time of it. Fans of Dave Filoni's animated series, The Clone Wars , found their glasses half empty when it was announced recently that the show would be coming, somewhat unexpectedly, to an end. Yet, very quickly, their glasses were half-filled, their frowns were turned upside down, and their dark side turned to the light side as it was revealed that Filoni was hard at work on Star Wars Rebels , a new animated series which will bridge the gap between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope . Though it recently looked like the Beverly Hills Cop saga would continue on television, Paramount Pictures has begun moving fast on another movie. The studio has enlisted Eddie Murphy to reprise his role as Axel Foley, and they’ve set Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec to write that script. That duo has done very well at the studio, with recent script credits that include Mission: Impossible–Ghost Protocol and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remake. The series began in 1984, tailor made for Murphy as the tough talking Detroit cop who was an outsider and excoriated by authority, but who was the smartest cop on the block. Martin Brest directed the first one, Tony Scott helmed the second, and the last one was directed by John Landis in 1994, back when Murphy was one of the studio’s biggest stars.
