Safe Haven Review By: MattInRC The decent Safe Haven proves that men can watch chick films without needing to hurl. In a desperate effort to demonstrate that I can recognize my human side, I present to you the following: I like romantic thrillers and well-made love stories. Who doesn't find Casablanca, Pretty Woman , or any well-made love story, a memorizing experience equal to an action film like Star Wars or the well-made drama Elizabeth ? But there is a fine line, and the temptation to cross into Schmaltzville has been well-documented, resulting in thoroughly unwatchable, emasculating fare. Like so many failed submissions, the films based on Nicholas Sparks books come dripping with estrogen and a box of Kleenex with every ticket. Some like The Notebook have even entered the weird Breakup Movie list for those who maintain such things. Another of Sparks' melodrams - Safe Haven - enters the realm, determined it can be more. To me, you had run out of fuel, and other action films - other movies that year like Goldeneye and Crimson Tide offered more depth to the action than I had expected. Even your fourth film - 2007's Live Free or Die Hard - got beaten out that year by National Treasure II and Transformers , all signaling that perhaps your best days were over. Thus the Valentines Day release of A Good Day to Die Hard comes as quite a shock to us. Does your once great franchise rediscover its footing and usher Willis back into his old form? Not so much. It's been nearly four years since Michael Mann last directed a feature film, but the wait for his next project may be over: The " Public Enemies " director has attached himself to helm an untitled thriller for Legendary Pictures with Chris Hemsworth attached to star. Mann had been developing the project for over a year, co-writing the script with Morgan Davis Foehl, who is also penning "Mass Effect" for Legendary. Plot details are unknown, other than that the film takes place in a world of cyber threats and attacks. Thomas Tull, Mann and Jon Jashni will produce with Alex Garcia exec producing. Beautiful Creatures Review By: MattInRC The surprisingly good Beautiful Creatures is everything Twilight wanted to be, but never could. Warner Bros has picked up the rights to an episode of Channel 4's Black Mirror to translate into a sci-fi thriller that will be produced Robert Downey Jr . and his Team Downey banner. The studio has acquired the rights to the episode The Entire History of You and will use the original episode's technology as a jumping off point for a feature adaptation. The episode of the British anthology show centers on a man with an implant that allows him to record and re-watch all of his life experiences. He begins to suspect his wife is having an affair and obsessively tries to find evidence until the relationship falls apart. For the film version, the story will be set in a near future where technology that allows users to re-experience past events, and follow a man who reconstructs his relationship to his dead wife - from her point of-view - and unknowingly uncovers a vast conspiracy. Some films should never be made - we all have our lists of head-scratchers and films we've almost walked out on.
