Though I’m not too gung-ho about concert movies, I have seen a few in my lifetime and METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER is the best one thus far. It’s truly electrifying, even those who aren’t big fans of heavy metal of Metallica band in particular can appreciate how visionary this movie is by director Nimrod Antal. I don’t blame those who may consider the post apocalyptic companion plot featuring Dane DeHaan as a bit weird and relenting, but every ghoulish imagery and illustration in this film capture the essence of what Metallica’s music represents, so it’s no surprise to me that funerals, and electric chairs, and master of puppet come to life in a form of stage theatrics and spectacles in METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER.

METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER stars Metallica, one of the most popular, influential rock bands in history. In this music driven, 3D motion picture event, award-winning filmmaker Nimród Antal immerses audiences in a bracing, raw and visceral cinematic experience with spectacular live performance footage of Metallica’s most iconic songs — created exclusively for film — combined with a bold, narrative story featuring imagery drawn from the band’s trailblazing iconography. Dane DeHaan portrays Trip, a young roadie sent on an urgent mission, during the Metallica’s roaring live set in front of a sold-out arena. The film features dazzling pyrotechnics, the most elaborate live-performance stage ever built and state-of-the-art 3-D photography, captured using up to 24 cameras simultaneously.

It’s funny how Dane DeHaan reminds me a lot of younger Leonardo DiCaprio, they both have those intense stare, an expression like a young man who has seen some sh*t and is trying to process it. DeHaan is a young talent that I think is a new force to be reckoned with, granted that talent is not used to full potential in METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER because all Dane has to do is run from one point of the street to another without getting caught in a mass street riot and without getting his head hanged by some apocalyptic horseman. I think director Nimrod Antal just wanted to convey his version of anarchy, his version of an uprising and the way he transition back and forth from that to Metalica’s concert is done in such a manner that makes you wonder if Metallica is singing about what Dane is going through.

Now, I didn’t grow up a huge Metallica fan, I did listen to a few of their songs and my favorite of theirs would have to be the song “Fuel” so when that song was played in METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER, I was rockin’!

Even if you think that the apocalyptic plot doesn’t make sense, I think you can appreciate the stage theatrics, whoever the stage manager is, he’s bloody brilliant, I’ve never attended a concert that elaborate, the whole thing has sequences that run like some kind of show in Vegas. They even construct a full blown statue, they have a giant electric chair and they even perform a faux accident, I’ve never seen a concert done like that before. Great 3D work too, with impressive camera work, definitely the best use of 3D that concert movie has ever done!

I may not be a huge METALLICA fans but in my book, but I’d have to admit that Lars is one of the best drummers and Kirk is one of the best guitars in the history of music and in METALLICA THROUGH THE NEVER, you get an up close VIP seat look at those two brilliant talents showcasing all they’ve got. The band got their fans riled up and entertained. 90 minutes of head-banging epicness. Metallica is the best at what they do.
