As if to respectfully mark the death of his creator, Jack Ryan's pensive face adorns a new poster for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Tom Clancy may have passed away but his famous CIA analyst, a former naval office who's battled drug barons, rogue Republicans and Sean Connery's Lithuanian accent in his many screen incarnations, lives on in a reboot that hands the Langley security pass to Chris Pine.
As the artwork shows and the casting of Captain Kirk has suggested for some time, this Jack Ryan isn't a desk-bound wonk in the Alec Baldwin mould, but a ready-formed action hero. Kenneth Branagh's reboot is an origin story that returns him to his espionage beginnings - in this film, he's an injured Marine who gets the shoulder tap from CIA vet Kevin Costner to work as a high-level analyst.
The pair tackle a Russian oligarch (played by director Branagh, who also directs), who combines international terrorism with shenanigans on the finance markets in a highly dubious way that in the old days, would have guaranteed him an invite to the SPECTRE Christmas party. Keira Knightley is also along for the ride.
