Channing Tatum, Zoe Saldana, Diego Luna and Christina Applegate are starring in Book of Life, an animated comedy from 20th Century Fox Animation and Reel FX Animation.
Guillermo del Toro is producing the feature, which also counts Ice Cube, Kate del Castillo, and Ron Perlman in its cast. Jorge Gutierrez, the co-creator of TV’s El Tigre: The Many Adventures of Manny Rivera, is directing the movie and also wrote the screenplay with Doug Langdale. The film has a release date of Oct. 17, 2014.
Book is described as the journey of Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds, where he must face his greatest fears.
The movie will have a unique visual style and the studios are promising a fresh take on popular pop songs. The original score and songs will be composed by Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel), who is currently touring with the popular Argentine band Bajofondo, which was just nominated for a Latin Grammy.
The cast is rounded out by Cheech Marin, Hector Elizondo and Placido Domingo, plus Ana de la Reguera (Eastbound and Down), Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included), comedian Gabriel Iglesias (Stand-Up Revolution), radio personality Ricardo (“El Mandril”) Sanchez and Danny Trejo.
Joining del Toro as producers are Brad Booker, Aaron Berger and Carina Schulze.
Book is being overseen by Aron Warner, one of the Oscar-winning producers of the Shrek franchise who now serves as Reel FX’s president of animation.
President of 20th Century Animation Vanessa Morrison, and the division’s vp of production Elizabeth Reddy are supervising on behalf of the studio.
While Tatum is voicing Superman in Warners' upcoming Lego Movie, this will be his first voice-starring gig.
This is Saldana's and Luna's first major animated work. Applegate has done voice work in Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks movies, Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, and various TV shows.
