Fox Searchlight Pictures Presidents Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley announced today that the company will re-release director Benh Zeitlin’s Academy-Award nominated film BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD in select cities for a special return engagement on Friday, January 18.
Nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director, the film’s return to theatres marks the one-year anniversary of its triumphant debut in Park City, UT at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and Excellence in Cinematography Award.11 “We are thrilled to bring this special film back to theaters a year after it debuted to standing ovations in Park City. With the Academy Award nominations, we hope Benh’s sublime vision can continue to win over audiences as it has around the globe for the last year,” said Utley and Gilula.
The film will open in markets including Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, Miami and Washington, DC in addition to New York City and Los Angeles, where it returns to Manhattan’s Sunshine and Lincoln Plaza theaters and Los Angeles’ Landmark 12 in Westwood.
In addition to its four Academy Award nominations, the film continues to collect accolades across the globe, garnering over 120 awards from film festivals and critics groups, as well as mentions on over 125 Ten-Best lists. Wallis’ nomination for Best Actress makes her the youngest nominee for the category in the Academy’s 85 years.
BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD is set in a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee where a six-year-old girl Hushpuppy (Best Actress Nominee Quvenzhane Wallis) exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural world is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions.
Fox Searchlight Pictures is a specialty film company that both finances and acquires motion pictures. It has its own marketing and distribution operations, and its films are distributed internationally by Twentieth Century Fox. Fox Searchlight Pictures is a unit of Fox Filmed Entertainment, a unit of Fox Entertainment Group.
