Ben Affleck's Argo is an engrossing and smart historical thriller that while not perfect has much to celebrate. Most films based on true stories inevitably suffer from two issues: how much has been embellished, and will audiences embrace a film in which they already know the ending. These were the questions surrounding the historical drama/thriller Argo before its release; and while we all know how things will end, we find ourselves on the edge of our seat, at once cheering for the safe return of Americans that we already know did come home, and booing those responsible for making this world such a dangerous place afterwards. A kickstarter campaign for a David Fincher movie? Yes, indeed. The venerable director, along with Tim Miller of Blur Studios and Dark Horse Studios, has taken to crowdfunding to help fund the development of an animated feature based on The Goon , the off-beat Eric Powell comic book The movie has been in development for a couple of years – Fincher is executive producing with Miller co-directing with Jeff Fowler – and thousands of dollars has been spent. An animated proof of concept clip was created and shown at Comic-Con but the project hasn’t gone to the next level since finding a financier to back an animated film that isn’t all-ages or family entertainment is seen as risky. (Tim Burton and Disney's Frankenweenie, which pushes the edges of kid horror and is only PG, is currenty struggling at the box office.) I know this really has nothing to do with my site but I had to post this. I guess eating Hot Pockets is Gangsta now. So begins Snoop Dogg's music video foray as a pitchman in a Hot Pockets ad. The clip, part of a digital campaign promoting the product, reworks the rapper's 2004 chart-topping single "Drop it Like it's Hot" into "Pocket Like it's Hot." Warner Bros has set Kevin Hart to play the fight promoter who gets two retired brawlers back in the ring in Grudge Match . Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone are now set to play the fighters who square off in the ring, and the studio has greenlighted the film that will be directed by Peter Segal. Tim Kelleher wrote the script and the most recent draft is by Entourage architect Doug Ellin, with Billy Gerber and Mark Steven Johnson producing with Michael Ewing. Hart is hot stuff after Think Like A Man, but the draw here will be to see Rocky Balboa and Jake LaMotta from Raging Bull go at it in a grudge match. When I moderated a Tribeca Film Festival panel for Universal’s 100th birthday with De Niro and Judd Apatow, De Niro said he didn’t really see himself recapturing the killer shape he got into when he starred in Raging Bull and in Cape Fear. Now, he’s playing a retired fighter, but I’ll bet De Niro puts back on the six-pack, knowing that at 66, Stallone is always jacked.

While it is the 11th book in Flynn’s series of espionage novels, American Assassin is an ideal place to start a movie franchise. A new Gangster Squad poster has hit the web, serving as definitive proof that the Untouchables-like tale of off-the-books law enforcers in in 1940s and 1950s L.A. will be arriving in cinemas on January 11, 2013. For those not in the know, Gangster Squad was originally set for a September 7 release date this year, but in the wake of the 2012 Aurora shooting at the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises , Warner Bros. and the Gangster Squad team decided to reshoot certain cinema-set scenes. Today two one-sheets have surfaced: Hugh Jackman's Jean Valjean's piercing green eyes and the tagline "Freedom is mine" on one, Russell Crowe's ever-so-stern Inspector Javert on another. The film stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and is being directed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) The film tells the story of Jean Valjean, a former prisoner who becomes mayor of a town in France. Mandalay Vision and Vertigo Entertainment are in early talks with Ryan Reynolds to star in The Voices , a psychological thriller that will be directed by Marjane Satrapi from a script by Paranormal Activity’s Michael R. Perry. The script made the Black List, and Satrapi got an Oscar nom for Best Animated Feature for her first film Persepolis , adapted from her semi-autobiographical novel. After Joe Johnston's Jurassic Park III in 2001, there was meant to be, at some point, a Jurassic Park IV . Scripts were offered to Spielberg and then rejected numerous times, with William Monahan and John Sayles' effort working on the idea of dinosaurs-on-the-mainland combined with human/dinosaur hybrid soldiers that could use guns and carry out simple tasks. Now artwork has surfaced online that reportedly originates with ILM's Andrew Cawrse and concept artist Carlos Huante, revealing just how far down the pipeline this pretty outrageous idea went.
