We’ve had one, protein-powered teaser poster for Michael Bay’s new dark comedy crime caper Pain And Gain. But with Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson as selling points, it was only a matter of time until they were put front and centre.
You’ve got to feel a little sorry for Wahlberg – he’s admirably bulked and toned here, but standing next to The Rock, even when he’s crouching, just makes anyone look a little less impressive.11 Pain features the duo as Floridian body-builders who get embroiled in a web of kidnap and extortion that also drags in folks played by Anthony Mackie, Ed Harris, Ken Jeong, Tony Shalhoub, Rob Corddry and supermodel Bar Paly (because what’s a Bay film without a supermodel these days?)
The story of the crime that goes badly wrong for all involved sounds a little too good to be true, but it’s real all right – Captain America scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely based their script on Pete Collins’ 1999 articles in the Miami New Times.
