While the success of The Avengers was certainly a firework under the rear ends of Warner Bros. and their plans to bring their DC Comics characters to the cinema, it hasn't been the smoothest process getting Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest teamed up for a Justice League film. But now, thanks to a legal victory over Krypton’s favourite son and some much-needed momentum, it appears Warners is ready to go head-to-head with Marvel, looking to get the League onto screens in 2015, the same year as The Avengers 2.
Gangster Squad scriptwriter Will Beall has been plugging away since at least June and several possible directors, including Ben Affleck and the Wachowskis, have been thrown up in rumor stories.
As regards the legal aspect, Warners scored a victory over the heirs of Superman's co-creator Joe Schuster yesterday, without which the studio would not have been able to make films, TV shows or comics featuring key elements of the characters mythos beyond next year without hatching a fresh – and likely very expensive – deal.
Now the way is apparently clear and plans can be solidified. According to the LA Times, the plan is still to launch Justice League first (there’s no indication on whether Henry Cavill’s take on Superman from Man Of Steel will feature) and use that as a platform to reboot Batman, launch Wonder Woman and, the studio hopes, rescue Green Lantern from the land of the flop. We've been down this road before, so let's wait and see if it all pans out...
