ONE FOR THE MONEY Movie Review

So what did RAMA think of ONE FOR THE MONEY? Make sure to follow him on Facebook and Twitter.

I’m a big fan of Katherine Heigl, I think she’s a fantastic actress and she is drop dead beautiful, sadly I’m not a fan of her movies, mainly because her movies haven’t given me any reason to like them. Heigl practically owns January which is the dumping ground for terrible movies. ONE FOR THE MONEY is the first on my list of this year’s most unpleasant experiences in theaters…

A proud, born-and-bred Jersey girl, Stephanie Plum’s got plenty of attitude, even if she’s been out of work for the last six months and just lost her car to a debt collector. Desperate for some fast cash, Stephanie turns to her last resort: convincing her sleazy cousin to give her a job at his bail bonding company…as a recovery agent. True, she doesn’t even own a pair of handcuffs and her weapon of choice is pepper spray, but that doesn’t stop Stephanie from taking on Vinny’s biggest bail-jumper: former vice cop and murder suspect Joe Morelli – yup, the same sexy, irresistible Joe Morelli who seduced and dumped her back in high school.
Nabbing Morelli would be satisfying payback – and a hefty payday – but as Stephanie learns the ins and outs of becoming a recovery agent from Ranger, a hunky colleague who’s the best in the business, she also realizes the case against Morelli isn’t airtight. Add to the mix her meddling family, a potentially homicidal boxer, witnesses who keep dying and the problem of all those flying sparks when she finds Morelli himself…well, suddenly Stephanie’s new job isn’t nearly as easy as she thought.

Those of you fans of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum novels might have their own arguments on whether or not Heigl well captured their favorite character, but as a film, this has all the ingredients of a failed, catastrophic rom-com.

The biggest disaster is the fact that the comedy is flat, none of its humor works, it’s not nearly as bad as Jennifer Aniston’s The Bounty Hunter, but it dances in that same ballroom. It’s supposed to be part whodunit mystery but nothing about it is smart, you don’t care for the characters or the chemistry between Heigl’s and O’Mara’s character. The first person narration is anything but interesting, and the whole Heigl semi naked in the bathroom scene is a cheap tease.

At the end of the movie, you’d feel like you want to blame the director, the screenwriters, the actors, and everybody involved with the production for wasting our time.

Thinking or recalling the movie again gives me headache. I don’t know if they want the audience to get the impression that Stephanie Plum is some kind of tough woman that’s in way over her head because the way Heigl plays the role gives me the impression of an incompetent, irritating, clueless woman. I was told that there are 18 Stephanie Plum novels, if we were to expect more adaptations to come our way, we’re off to a rocky start with ONE FOR THE MONEY. This movie makes bounty hunters everywhere look like a joke.

Naked Gun Reboot On It's Way

If you've seen Naked Gun - or The Naked Gun: From The Files Of Police Squad ! to give its full title - you'll know that it's a comedic masterpiece that springboards off astonishing levels of silliness and random spoofery. Leslie Nielsen's Frank Drebin is a loveable buffoon for the ages, even when he's discussing his dicky prostrate. Do not, however, expect the Ed Helms -starring reboot to adopt exactly the same tack. According to Naked Gun director/co-writer David Zucker, talking up Airplane!'s screening at Nashville's Wild West Comedy Festival, the new version will not attempt to hit the same spoofy sweet spot as the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams' 1988 comedy. "It won’t be like the Naked Gun that I did," Zucker revealed. "It may be good, but it won’t be that kind of movie. They’re going to use the title. They asked me if I wanted to produce. They’re nice people, but they don’t want to do that style of spoof that I do." One departure...
