BEAUTY AND THE BEAST 3D Movie Review
By: RAMA

Did RAMA have the same feeling watching it in 3D as he did watch it for the first time in 1991? Make sure to follow him on Facebook and Twitter.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST looks even more stunning in 3D and my favorite Disney princess, the sexiest nerd/bookworm of them all, Belle, is as wonderful as I remember her. It’s been ages since the last time I watched this film, so it’s good to have it back.
Some will argue that theatrically re-releasing BEAUTY AND THE BEAST in 3D is just Disney’s trying to get more money from you, be that as it may, I’m glad all of this happened because the 3D works and it amplifies everything that’s glorious about the beloved classic…

Originally released in 1991, Beauty and the Beast is a classic “tale as old as time” that follows the adventures of Belle, a bright young woman imprisoned in the castle of a mysterious beast and his enchanted staff, who must learn the most important lesson of all – that true beauty comes from within. Beauty and the Beast was the first animated film ever nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Picture, earning an additional five Oscar® nominations and winning two. It has grossed $380.4 million worldwide.

Once again, I’m not an expert on 3D or depth of field, and it seems like most of today’s films that have gone through 3D post conversion didn’t seem to have any impact at all on our movie-watching experience. Once in a while you’d get one that could take your breath away, like How To Train Your Dragon, but most of the time, 3D is just for plain business purposes.

< I think Disney did more to BEAUTY AND THE BEAST than just add the 3D element because when I was at the screening, I could tell some level of restoration or enhancement has been done and so what you’d get is a more rich and bold collection of colors. The ballroom dance scene, for example, was gorgeous when you watched the film in the 90s and it’s gotten even more majestic now. The moment Belle walked down those steps in her bright yellow dress, time stood still and all eyes turned to her. The songs, by Alan Menken and the late great Howard Ashman, that we practically grew up with brings back nostalgic and sweet heartfelt memories, “Be Our Guest” sequence specifically is still the most spectacular, elaborate and glamorous in-house entertainment ever animated in my opinion.

I enjoy how the 3D plays with the contrast of the front and background images and also the weather in the story, at times it even feels like you’re watching a pop-up book turned into film, some of the stationary images look even closer than they did before and the result gives that immersive experience. The impression on the interior design of the castle looks even more massive and epic, extremely spacious.
In this day and age where animated films are pretty much CG, there’s something refreshing about going back to hand-drawn and to do that with one of the most beloved classics of all time, the first animated feature to get Oscar-nominated for best picture, makes it all the more special.

I probably don’t need to spend much time telling you why I think BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is a great film, much less a great film that we should go back to again and again. No story out there could better convey the message of the beauty within. I used to wonder how on earth could belle and beast fall in love in such a short time, but I think the film manages to comprise their eventual becoming lovers in just one argument scene where Belle tells Beast to hit the brakes on his short temper, you can ask a bunch of lovebirds out there and they’ll tell you the moment they know they’ve found their ‘one’ is when they argue and come to an understanding, arguments that don’t get unreasonable, but arguments that led to the couple seeing right through each other.

But that’s just one of the many great aspects about this film, I’m sure you can add more.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST carries all the ingredients needed for a Disney classic,.. enchanted castle, a spell and the true love that breaks it, a beautiful princess, characters that you care about, memorable catchy songs, I even find the villagers holding pitchforks and torches amusing after all these years.
So this New Year, put on your 3D glasses and return to a tale as old as time.

5 out of 5
