Gerard Butler has been set to star in Mavericks, the Curtis Hanson-directed fact-based drama for Walden Media. The film is based on the true story of Santa Cruz surf phenom Jay Moriarity and his quest to ride the treacherous Northern California breaks known as Mavericks, where winter swells create waves the size of five-story buildings. Butler will play Rick "Frosty" Hesson, the mentor who trained Moriarity for over a year and forged a close relationship with the surfer in the process. Though Moriarity survived those impossible waves, he died at 22 in a diving accident. But he remains an inspiration to surfers, who coined the phrase "Live like Jay."
Have you ever wanted to be in a film? This is your chance, several hundred locals will be needed to be extras in the film. Filming will take place in Santa Cruz sometime in October of this year. Make your way over HERE for more information.
We have an update on the Maverick surf contest. A group of surfers, business owners and community leaders have united to bring peace back into the lineup at Mavericks and stability to the renowned big wave surfing event. The group, led by Mavericks pioneer Jeff Clark, is re-organizing the event as the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational.
In June 2011, two groups were vying for the permit to hold the contest. The groups joined forces in order to unite the community and create an entirely new event that will keep its focus on the athletes, community, environment and the sport of big wave surfing.
New Leadership
The company, Mavericks Invitational Inc., is led by a five-member Board of Directors and has a team of logistics and operations personnel to manage the contest and Mavericks Surf Festival, a new venue for contest viewing, booths and the awards ceremony. The board consists of:
Jeff Clark (Half Moon Bay, CA): Big wave legend and Mavericks pioneer, surfboard shaper and owner of Mavericks Surf Shop located in Pillar Point Harbor, overlooking Mavericks.
Ken “Skindog” Collins (Santa Cruz, CA): Long-time Mavericks surfer and competitor in the contest, with more than 20 years of experience in the big wave community including honors as the Billabong XXL Award for Ride of the Year and Monster Tube. He is the Northern California Sales Representative for Volcom and in 2011 launched a Web site called ChasingMonsters.com that is dedicated to the art of big wave riding.
Rocky Raynor (Half Moon Bay, CA): President and CEO of Ultra-Flex Inc., since 1982, with a strong commitment to the Half Moon Bay community. Rocky is currently the volunteer Vice President of the Boys & Girls Club of the Coast Side and Head Coach of the Half Moon Bay Middle School Surf Club.
Cassandra Clark (Half Moon Bay, CA): President of Mavericks Surf Company, which operates Mavericks Surf Shop, and Communications Director for Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, Ca., with extensive experience in event management, business management and leadership. Former instructor at California State University East Bay, past president and board member of the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce.
Brian Overfelt (Half Moon Bay, CA): Manager and working owner of Old Princeton Landing and co-owner of Princeton Yarns, event photographer for the Big Wave World Tour, long-time Mavericks photographer and community leader. Brian led a successful effort that led to $5 million funding and work by the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge Pillar Point Harbor and nourish local beaches.
The San Mateo County Harbor District will consider the permit application at a public meeting on Wednesday, September 21, at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Services Building, 33 Arroyo Drive, South San Francisco. Public comment is welcome.

“There’s been controversy over the years that cast a shadow over Mavericks and the big wave community,” Clark said. “But this is a new day and new group that is united and ready to present a world-class event. We’re doing this right, for the right reasons and for the long term. Everything is where it should be now, and we can get back to a great event showcasing the world’s best big wave surfers.”The group is presenting its plan to the San Mateo County Harbor Commission on Wednesday, Sept. 21, to gain approval for the event permit. If approved, the window for the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational will run from December 1, 2011 through March 30, 2012.
