Brian Kirk, who directed several episodes of the HBO hit "Game of Thrones," is in early negotiations to helm "Thor 2" for Marvel Studios and Disney, Variety's Marc Graser exclusively reports. The Irish helmer has also directed episodes of "Boardwalk Empire," Showtime's "Dexter" and the upcoming "Great Expectations." "Thor 2" would mark the directorial debut on a big-budget Hollywood tentpole for the director who rose to the top of the list after he showed his abilities to juggle large ensembles of thesps and complex storylines in his TV projects, while also grounding the fantasy genre via his work on "Thrones." The "Thor" sequel, sest for release July 26, 2013, is expected to feature a large cast of Aasgardians and creatures in the Norse mythology-set world.
Although he was invited back to direct Hemsworth in another "Thor," Kenneth Branagh opted not to return. Instead, he's looking at directing "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" for Fox 2000.
