Holy freakin’ A! THE CHANGE-UP got me laughin’ so hard, I thought I was gonna die! I admit, I had my concerns at first, I thought it was going to be one of those R-rated comedies that only rely on F-bombs and dick jokes and yes this movie has that but it’s got insane surprises that you wouldn’t see comin’ a mile away. You think you have these two lives figured out, that when they switch bodies, you think each of them would just have to deal with and adjust to the other person’s lifestyle, the one that you already have in mind, and that’s it. But nope, both of them have no idea what they just unintentionally got themselves into and that’s where the comedy works…
Growing up together, Mitch (Reynolds) and Dave (Bateman) were inseparable best friends, but as the years have passed they’ve slowly drifted apart. While Dave is an overworked lawyer, husband and father of three, Mitch has remained a single, quasi-employed man-child who has never met a responsibility he liked. To Mitch, Dave has it all: beautiful wife Jamie (Leslie Mann), kids who adore him and a high-paying job at a prestigious law firm. To Dave, living Mitch’s stress free life without obligation or consequence would be a dream come true.
Following a drunken night out together, Mitch and Dave’s worlds are turned upside down when they wake up in each other’s bodies and proceed to freak the &*#@ out.
Despite the freedom from their normal routines and habits, the guys soon discover that each other’s lives are nowhere near as rosy as they once seemed. Further complicating matters are Dave’s sexy legal associate, Sabrina (Olivia Wilde), and Mitch’s estranged father (Alan Arkin). With time not on their side, Mitch and Dave comically struggle to avoid completely destroying each other’s lives before they can find a way to get their old ones back.
R-rated comedies this year have been a big fail. Your Highness and Bad Teacher are proof that funny trailers and funny concept don’t make funny movies.
Horrible Bosses was saved by its clever plot.
As I mentioned earlier, what THE CHANGE-UP has for its secret weapon is its many surprises. You have these two characters, Mitch (Ryan Reynolds) the foul mouthed, crude playboy, and Dave (Jason Bateman), the family man. But Mitch’s life isn’t going nowhere and he has daddy issues, while Dave feels that he misses out on his party years that Mitch still gets to enjoy day in and day out. So it’s a tale of you don’t know what you got til it’s gone.
The fun part is not when they wake up and find that they’re not in their bodies, the fun part comes when they get hit with constant, endless unexpected situations.
Dave in Mitch’s body soon finds out about Mitch’s unpleasant adult gig, not to mention one of the ladies he’s supposed to bed carries an extra passenger, and Mitch in Dave’s body, despite having the hugest crush on the wife (Leslie Mann) for many years, soon finds out about her certain particular habit on certain nights.
They both knew that it’s not going to be easy, they just didn’t know that it’s going to be out of their league. They’re in way, way, way over their heads. It’s not all that it’s cracked up to be.
You just have to see it to know what I’m talking about because writing it wouldn’t do any of it justice, I guarandamntee you that much.
First half of the film focuses on crackin’ you up, the second half of the film puts more emphasis on the characters, to see if they have what it takes to do well living different lives, so after a while, it does get less comical, but it doesn’t get sentimental, the words that come out of Mitch’s mouth always throw a left hook
I think Ryan and Bateman are absolutely great in this film, don’t expect top notch acting but their performances work for what they are and both of them have excellent comedic timing.
Olivia Wilde is just drop dead gorgeous, what a sight for sore eyes, speaking of eyes, don’t believe everything you see, I don’t mean to bearer of bad news, I know some of you badly want to see Wilde’s breasts but the ones you see in this film are actually CGI, ya sorry guys! Better luck next time!
