Steven Soderbergh and Channing Tatum, who worked together on the action-thriller Haywire (out this August), are reteaming for Magic Mike, a drama set in the world of male strippers.
Tatum is to play Magic Mike, who schools a young dancer in the tricks of the trade.
The project draws on the actor’s real-life experiences as a stripper when he was a 19-year-old in Tampa.
The start date for the privately financed pic is yet to be determined.
The film will be produced by Nick Wechsler, Gregory Jacobs, Tatum and Reid Carolin, who is also writing the script.
“When Channing talked to me about this, I thought it was one of the best ideas I’d ever heard for a movie. I said I wanted in immediately. It’s sexy, funny and shocking. We’re using Saturday Night Fever as our model, so hopefully we’re on the right track," Soderbergh said in a statement.
Added Tatum, "This was a wild and pivotal time in my life and I couldn't be more thrilled to go down the rabbit hole with Steven.”
