Rumor: The Avengers To Battle The Skrulls & The Kree

Marvel Studios behemoth The Avengers will begin shooting in Albuquerque, N.M., next spring, and a local newspaper has possibly revealed some blockbuster news about the storyline.

An Albuquerque resident and Ain't It Cool News reader picked up a copy of the Albuquerque Journal on Christmas Eve and, in a story about the production coming to the local Albuquerque Studios for a good six months or so, noticed this line: "The Avengers' script will blend Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger story lines as the Avengers battle with two alien races, the Skrulls and the Kree."

The Kree-Skrull war has played a major role in numerous Marvel Comics storylines, centering around an ongoing conflict between the somewhat humanoid Kree and the more malevolent, shape-shifting Skrulls. The battle has come to Earth repeatedly, with the Skrulls impersonating both superheroes and figures in the highest reaches of government.

The Journal article gives no source for the plot information, so it's difficult to say whether this is official news or not. What is known, however, is that the plots of both Thor and Captain America (out next May and July, respectively) will lead into The Avengers, and it's confirmed that the powerful Skrull device known as the Cosmic Cube will appear in Captain America.

The Avengers, which comes out in 2012, will also shoot in Michigan and New York, where most of the action allegedly takes place.

The Skrulls

are an extraterrestrial humanoid race who have created a vast interstellar empire, the oldest known empire still in existence, within the Andromeda Galaxy.. A Skrull can mentally cause the unstable molecules that comprise his or her body to become pliant, enabling him or her to assume other forms through muscular expansion and contraction. Once a new shape has been assumed (human, animal, alien), it takes a conscious act of will to assume another form or revert to natural.. Although the Skrulls became aware of Earth (due to its nearness to a natural warp-space access point) eons ago, it was not until recent times that they considered Earth’s threat. Their first regular surveillances of Earth began in the 1930s. To date most of the Skrulls’ excursions to Earth have been extremely small-scale, with no more than a handful of soldier-infiltrators being dispatched at any given time. It is not yet known how the death of the current ruling family will affect official policy toward Earth or the government of the empire in general.

The Kree

is an extraterrestrial humanoid race who have created a vast empire in the Greater Magellanic Cloud and have, on certain occasions, trafficked with the beings of Earth. The Kree race began on the planet Hala in the Pama system long before the first mammals appeared on Earth. The original Kree had blue-colored skin (later generations interbred with genetically-compatible aliens to produce the pink-skinned second race). Outwardly humanoid to a large degree, Kree bodies are adapted to environmental characteristics on Hala that are un-Earth-like: notably, higher gravity and higher nitrogen content in the atmosphere. Although the Kree cannot breathe Earth’s atmosphere without special apparatus, their denser bodies afford them about twice the average human being’s strength and endurance. Despite their physical superiority and relatively advanced technology, the Kree race has reached the pinnacle of their evolutionary development.

There is a huge backstory to the Skrulls and Kree, starting way back in 1961 with Fantastic Four issue 2. How can you present these two intergalactic races together in a film of 2 hours or less and do justice to that history?

Oh, and the Cosmic Cube was invented by AIM, not the Skrulls.

Naked Gun Reboot On It's Way

If you've seen Naked Gun - or The Naked Gun: From The Files Of Police Squad ! to give its full title - you'll know that it's a comedic masterpiece that springboards off astonishing levels of silliness and random spoofery. Leslie Nielsen's Frank Drebin is a loveable buffoon for the ages, even when he's discussing his dicky prostrate. Do not, however, expect the Ed Helms -starring reboot to adopt exactly the same tack. According to Naked Gun director/co-writer David Zucker, talking up Airplane!'s screening at Nashville's Wild West Comedy Festival, the new version will not attempt to hit the same spoofy sweet spot as the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams' 1988 comedy. "It won’t be like the Naked Gun that I did," Zucker revealed. "It may be good, but it won’t be that kind of movie. They’re going to use the title. They asked me if I wanted to produce. They’re nice people, but they don’t want to do that style of spoof that I do." One departure...
