BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

Paul Haggis To Write The Equalizer

"The Equalizer" Has Found It's Screenwriter

Fresh off their collaboration on “The Next Three Days,” Paul Haggis and Russell Crowe may be working together on a new project: “The Equalizer.”

Crowe has long been attached as a star and producer of the feature adaptation of the late-’80s TV series, and Haggis, who just directed Crowe in the upcoming Lionsgate thriller “Days,” is negotiating to take on the script. While the direction of the feature version is still being plotted, the original CBS series concerned the exploits of a former secret agent turned vigilante who could be hired to right wrongs.

Edward Woodward originated the role of Robert McCall, who provided services for clients free of charge, on the condition they returned his help if he ever came calling. As opposed to the jokiness of the era's other shows such as “The A-Team,” “Magnum P.I.” and “Simon & Simon,” “The Equalizer” was remarkably grim. It also featured a notable theme song composed by Police drummer Stewart Copeland.

Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch of Escape Artists are producing the film along with Tony Eldridge of Lonetree Entertainment, Mace Neufeld, Alex Siskin and Michael Sloan.

Haggis is not on the hook to direct at the moment, though that remains a possibility. The only other project he has been attached to helm is an adaptation of “Ranger’s Apprentice” that he co-wrote for United Artists and stalled as a result of corporate parent MGM’s financial struggles.

Haggis most recently wrote and directed “In the Valley of Elah” and co-wrote the James Bond films “Quantum of Solace” and “Casino Royale.” “The Next Three Days,” which Haggis also wrote and produced, hits theaters in November.

Naked Gun Reboot On It's Way

If you've seen Naked Gun - or The Naked Gun: From The Files Of Police Squad ! to give its full title - you'll know that it's a comedic masterpiece that springboards off astonishing levels of silliness and random spoofery. Leslie Nielsen's Frank Drebin is a loveable buffoon for the ages, even when he's discussing his dicky prostrate. Do not, however, expect the Ed Helms -starring reboot to adopt exactly the same tack. According to Naked Gun director/co-writer David Zucker, talking up Airplane!'s screening at Nashville's Wild West Comedy Festival, the new version will not attempt to hit the same spoofy sweet spot as the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams' 1988 comedy. "It won’t be like the Naked Gun that I did," Zucker revealed. "It may be good, but it won’t be that kind of movie. They’re going to use the title. They asked me if I wanted to produce. They’re nice people, but they don’t want to do that style of spoof that I do." One departure...
