"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" Wins The Box Office Race
"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" continued its boxoffice dominance on Friday as it drained moviegoers' wallets of an estimated $28.6 million.
Summit's supernatural romance, playing in 4,468 theaters in North America, ticked up slightly on its third day of release from the $24.2 million it collected on Thursday as its domestic cume rose to $121.3 million.
Current estimates suggests the movie could power its way to a four-day holiday weekend gross of about $106 million, which would add up to an opening six-day tally at more than $198 million, putting it ahead of "New Moon's" first six-day number of $178.9 million.
Meanwhile, in second place, Paramount's fantasy "The Last Airbender," held steady. Following its $16.4 million bow on Thursday, it again grossed more than $16 million on Friday.
In its third weekend, Disney's "Toy Story 3" held down the third spot, taking in about $10.5 million. Now with more than $269 million in total grosses, the sequel moves closer to cracking the $300 million mark domestically.
Sophomore hold-overs "Grown Ups" and "Knight and Day" took the fourth and fifth positions respectively. Sony's "Grown Ups" took in $6.9 million, while Fox's "Knight and Day" picked up $3.4 million.
