Ashton Kutcher and Jamie Foxx Team Up For Buddy-Cop Movie "Streets on Fire"
It has been awhile since we had buddy cop movies, last one maybe Rush Hour 3 and this weekend's movie Cop-Out .
The buddy cop genre may be making a comeback, however. Ashton Kutcher, via his Katalyst Films shingle, is producing Streets on Fire, a buddy cop action-comedy drama (which one?) with designs to star. His partner? Jamie Foxx. (Maybe they hit it off on the set of Valentine’s Day.) Let’s see here: One black, one white partner. Check. One by the books, one freewheeling partner? Check. And one with facial hair, one without? Check. Ladies and gentlemen: The buddy-cop trifecta!
The script, which was on the 2009 Black List, comes from Justin Britt-Gibson, a 27-year-old freelance journalist slash screenwriter who once wrote quite an impressive piece on race relations for the Washington Post. And while I’m sure the script must have been decent if it made the Black List, the logline is typical of buddy cop movies: It’s about a straight arrow Chicago cop with anger issues (Foxx) who teams up with a brash and cocky one (Kutcher), and the two “become anything other than friends.” They stumble into a gang of killers intercepting the city’s drugs, and reluctantly agree to work together on the case, only to find out that the vicious gang is actually made up of dirty cops.
